The Donkey [a.k.a. Jackass for the Hour – Zechariah 9,9]
by G.K. Chesterton
When fishes flew and forests walked and figs grew upon thorn
Some moment when the moon was blood, then surely I was born
With monstrous head and sickening cry and ears like errant wings
The devil’s walking parody on all four footed things
The tattered outlaw of the earth, of ancient crooked will
Starve, scourge, deride me: I am dumb; I keep my secret still
Fools! For I also had my hour, one far fierce hour and sweet
There was a shout about my ears and palms before my feet

I hope no one is offended by this play on the title of Book I of the Trilogy. Paradox, good irony and good humour are just so very necessary for a wholesome appreciation of our redemption and, as we hope, salvation by the Word Incarnate. Remember the picture of the crucified donkey, mocking the original Alexámenos, who was most probably a martyr at the time of Roman Emperor Valerian. Surely that Alexámenos could take such mockery in stride and proclaim that we should all be considered to be just so foolish before the Hour of our Redemtion, that is, considered to be so foolish in the ever so blind perspective of this fallen world.
Each one of us should be, must be, a Jackass for the Hour for the sake of the many!
