AEternvs ille cælestium was written by Pope Sixtus V as a would-be promulgation of his would-be 1590 (MDXC) Vulgate shown here.

The document, IMHO, makes the top five list for the most important documents on the relationship between Scripture, Tradition and the Magisterium, that is, after 1) Sacrosancta and 2) Insuper of the Council of Trent, 3) Dei Filius of Vatican Council I and, 4) Dei Verbum of Vatican Council II.

AEternvs ille cælestium was, however, ditched for a good reason, only to be forgotten for everything else it contained, everything else which has been so desperately needed for the Counter-Reformation, which has hardly begun to begin to this day, precisely for this reason. In a sense, this is THE document of ecumenism, if that term is used to mean that everyone is to become Roman Catholic.

DRAMA: As far as I know, there are only two extant copies of this document, in different places, locked in vaults buried in a series of locked rooms. The rest were destroyed back in the 1500’s. If you are incredibly diligent, you will find a few Latin excerpts and a few translated sentences here and there, usually by disgruntled Protestants. I have not found more than this.

I photographed and transcribed this document by hand (with the aid of ferocious proof-readers). It needs to be translated if it is going to be of benefit to anyone. It is one of the key documents for the first volume of the Trilogy. Although this will only come up after the first handful of chapters (and then later during a trial), it is best to start this translation now. Let’s see how quickly we can go for the sake of the readers who do not know Latin (and for the sake of those who thought they knew Latin!).

Let’s translate this, the most Catholic sounding document I have ever read (TRIUMPHALISM par excellence). The Latin is a bit flowery, though it is magnificent. The teaching is clear. The effects of the document and the controversy surrounding it have been overwhelming for the Church, that is, inasmuch as all of this has been neglected. There is much riding on this. Try your hand. Consider it a WDTDocumentRS kind of an exercise in the spirit of WDTPRS.

    why did he put in parentheses the year 1590 when the Roman numerals were obviously 1589? Why does the writing reflect 1589, but the Vulgate’s binding reflect 1590?

    It’s March 1, 1589, because at that time, March 25 marked the new year according to the Kalends. So, March 24, 1589 would be followed by March 25, 1590.
